RELAXATION
of Your Neuro-Musculo-Fascial System with

DSL-Edgework:
Bodywork / Yoga / Whole Health Therapeutics

DSL Edgework is an Integrated System of Soft Tissue Therapeutics utilizing:

• Hands-On, Structurally-based, Muscle Therapy Techniques
• Mindful Stretching
(AKA Physical/Mental Yoga*)
• Tai Chi/Chi Kung-based Exercise & Movement Therapy
• Myo-Structural* Balancing
(for selecting which muscles to work with & in what order)

* The word Yoga, as used by The DSL Method, means the increased degree and QUALITY of Attention one applies to whatever they are doing. The DSL Method of Yoga is overtly NON-mystical, NON-religious, NON-authoritarian, and NON-guru in nature.

* Myo-Structural refers to the Psycho-Neuro-Musculo-Fascial System.

The Objective of DSL Edgework is to DEEPLY RELAX & Substantially Decrease any accumulated C.E.M.&.N.T. (Chronic, Excess Muscle & Nerve Tension & Stress) and BALANCE the Structural & Postural Muscles of the Body.

Relaxation LENGTHENS muscles, which DE-Compresses the:

• Joints & Bones
• Tendons & Ligaments
• Other Muscle Groups
• Nerves & Blood Vessels
• Organs & Glands

You will (very likely) experience Decreased:

• AGING ... Just Don't DO It! . . . Click HERE for MORE on Anti-Aging
• Tension & Stress
• Aches & Pains
• Shortness or Shallowness of Breath
• Negative Habit Patterns

Structurally Balancing the Muscles will:

• Provide FAR Deeper & Long-lasting RELAXATION
• Allow Far Better & More Effortless Posture
• Sit, Stand & Walk with FAR Less Effort
• Move & Work with Gravity, not against it
• Increase Balance, Coordination & Precision Movement
• Allow More Free-Flowing of Energy & Vitality
• Increase Strength & Endurance

Bio-Structural De-Compression
& Postural Balancing ...

is accomplished, quite simply, by nothing more than
Deep Relaxation of your Neuro-Musculo-Fascial system.

Many people spend years or decades with various aches, pains, dysfunctions and postural problems. They search for answers. Usually, their doctors and therapists have searched in vain for some structural explanation for their issues. A misaligned vertebrae, a degenerated joint surface, bone spurs, degenerating or herniated discs, or ... the list goes on. But for the most part, they look for and treat the various bone and cartiledge structures, or occasionally, the ligaments and tendons.

This sometimes works. ... Often, it does not. ... In such cases, it is in many cases the SOFT TISSUES of the body — the neuromuscular and musculofascial systems — where the Tissue Issues are really hiding out. But far too often, these Soft Tissue systems are all but ignored.

It is sometimes hard to believe, but many of our physical issues — even some life-long issues — result from our many years of slowly and incrementally accumulated C.E.M.&.N.T. (Chronic, Excess Muscle & Nerve Tension & Stress). So slow, in fact, we don't notice it much, except maybe from getting a little stiffer, year by year, decade by decade; but no big deal. The quietly, chronically contracting muscles are increasingly putting various pressures on the nerves, the blood vessels, the joints, the organs, the tendons and ligaments, and even other muscles.

The Straw That Broke The Camel's Back

THEN ... some of us have a Straw That Broke The Camel's Back Moment — merely picking up an empty suitcase or phonebook, or whatever — and BAM!, we're on the floor with pain, maybe on the way to the hospital soon after that.

Or, we've had a few very traumatic events (car accidents, falling down stairs, etc.), setting such tensions in place, more-or-less instantly. And though the resulting symptoms might fade to varying degrees, the muscular contraction patterns in many cases do not go away on their own. Sometimes, they are there for life... Or the pain subsides but the limitations on movement do not. Or, you're just deeply uncomfortable much or all the time.

Therefore, IF it is C.E.M.&.N.T., in MANY CASES, it only takes deep, thorough RELAXATION of the neuromuscular and myofascial systems to relieve, and often eliminate, those soft tissue issues. Unfortunately, truly deep relaxation is not always as easy as some make it sound.

(Opens in new window so you don't lose this page.)

Now, many people regularly get various kinds massage or bodywork therapy (such as Rolfing®, NMT, Myofascial Release, Deep Tissue, etc.). But there are little known subtleties of muscle therapy necessary to apply in those who've had the really deeply held tensions that just never seem to go away. ...

You will learn about the subtleties of what is more commonly known as clinical / medical massage & muscle therapy here in these pages.

Structural & Nerve DE-Compression

One complicating factor, however, is that many people have structural or postural imbalances that transmit their problems to and from other parts of their body. So while their various doctors and/or therapists spend months or years trying to find the pain in their lower back, neck or where ever, they all miss the fact that many such pains are coming from over-contracted abdominal muscles, or hamstrings, or gluteals, or other possible muscles. The cause of any particular pain might very well be transmitted from many different and very distant places within the body.

So too, nerves that are entrapped, compressed or otherwise irritated can be sending signals far up or down their pathways, sometimes through the central nervous system to other parts of the body. (Just clench your fist really tight for a few moments and you can feel how quickly a nerve can get irritated. Now, imagine you've been clenching that fist for a few years or decades!!!)

Either way, be they structurally or neurologically transmitted strains, they are not always obvious, and can take a LOT of time to track down and then get them relaxed.

Self-Awareness Component

For those who want an even more complete experience, adding in a Self-Awareness Component to the yoga and/or bodywork process engages far more of the entire Psycho-Neuro-Musculo-Fascial system. That's because many of our tensions, stresses & habit patterns are held in place by our volitional nervous system, which operates, much or most of the time, in the sub- or unconscious mind.

In fact, modern neuroscience tells us that the conscious part of the brain is only capable of processing about 4 to 7 out of every 100,000 bits of data flowing through our nervous systems. So being and staying aware of even a small fraction of our inner-processes is quite limited.

By-the-way, when speaking of self-awareness, we mean merely (but often with profound results) that you are learning to place more in-the-moment ATTENTION on what you are feeling and doing, and get better at learning to feel more deeply, and then learning to interpret what you're feeling more accurately and fully, then responding to what you see, feel and learn.

(This is why besides the initials of my name, DSL also stands for The Dynamics of Structural Learning. If you'd like to know more about that, you can down load an e-book called What Is DSL? later on this page.)

The so-called "Magic" of Self-Awareness, as we use the concept here, is that Paying Attention to What You're Doing & Feeling works better than the mind drifting off to whatever catches your fancy in that moment. Yeah, stuff can be accomplished, good results can happen, without focusing much. But nowhere near what's possible when you are attentively engaged in the process. Yet it is merely a matter of developing the skill and intention of becoming more interested in what you are feeling, and what your bodymind is telling you, and what to do about it. ...

By self-awarenss, we also mean meditative. Yet our's is a NON-mystical or NON-religioius or NON-Hindu interpretation of what the word meditation means in other cultures and philosophies.

A NOTE ON MEDITATION: For those who think meditation is about trying to make their thoughts stop, we think that is counter-productive. Your mind does not like that, because it thinks that you NEED it. Which you DO, just not all of the time. But it is perceived by your mind, literally, as a survival issue. ...

Your thinking mind is an INHERENT part of your very self-identity, and that identity will defend its existence at all costs. It might tolerate some modifications here and there, even some life-changing events. But telling it to go away is difficult, if not impossible. Trying to do so can even cause much self-delusion and psycho-pathology.

Simply put, if you are Paying Attention (which is by definition an in-the-moment experience) to your various streams of thoughts (which are by definition past/future oriented) then the more attention you pay to your thoughts, the more your attention displaces those thoughts, and the thoughts tend to dissolve -- without effort or willpower. (This is NOT the same as free-association methods of meditation.) ...

Seeing how THAT process works can bring profound insights into many of the positive and negative workings of the mind -- and body, too. It also turns the tables on the Thinking Mind because you are NOT trying to tell it to go away. You are actually learning about the STRUCTURE of your mind by observing it, which is done in part by experiencing how the CONTENT of you mind flows through the structure in as neutral a way as possible. ...

FINALLY, when certain thought streams subside or stop, MANY neuromuscular tensions just STOP right then and there. Others tension take more time, but the principle is the same. (This is more true for those with with tensions derived primarily from psycho-emotional issues.)

DSL-Edgework is NOT about "Quick
Relief" of Symptoms or Conditions

Therefore, The DSL Method of Yoga & Bodywork is NOT in itself about "getting fixed," or quick relief of pain or dysfunction, nor "fixing" your bad posture. DSL is about becoming more engaged in your internal, bodymind processes, gaining the mental and physical skills of self-awareness, self-evaluation, and self-adjustment — plus Tension Reduction Strategies — in harmony with the changing conditions of life. In the process, you release the natural forces within your bodymind that have been getting in your way for much of your life.

Your DSL Therapist does this merely by applying gentle pressure to the skin, fascia and muscles at certain locations in your body, and allowing your nervous system and awareness to make the necessary positive changes your bodymind needs. As your muscles "Auto-Magically"** start to relax, your therapist will increase their manual pressure to match your rate and depth of tension release.  They will FOLLOW your musculo-fascial release, but will not PUSH the release.

(**It's not really magic at all but I like that phrase!)

NO Pain, Means MORE Gain

Therein lies part of the secret to the NO Pain, MORE Gain philosophy of The DSL Method. The therapy should NOT be irritating AT ALL. It should be a fully relaxing experience for you. You, the Client, are ALWAYS in charge of how much pressure you are feeling. And it's NOT about what you can tolerate. You should LIKE or be totally NEUTRAL about what you are feeling. You should be inviting the sensations.

With a simple communication system you develop with your DSL Therapist, if you are feeling too much discomfort, or ANY kind of pain, they will ALWAYS back off to the degree you want and ask them to. (Intense sensations are fine, as long as they are not really pain. You'll learn how to feel the difference.)

YES, you are responsible to communicate your needs, but your therapist will, to the best of their ability, always be watching to see if you are slipping into discomfort or pain and adjust pressure or technique as necessary. But it is not always easy to tell when a Client is in pain, so it's a two-way street.

For those who "like it deep" and "can take a lot of pressure," you'll find that works for some things, but NOT HERE. You will get FAR MORE RELAXATION & RESULTS if you respect and respond to these often VERY subtle signals from your body. The very subtle reflex pathways of the nervous system are often SO subtle, you cannot feel them when they activate, nor if they persist. In fact, much of the results from The DSL Method come directly from the RE-sensitizing of those often subtle and widely varied messages of your nervous system, brain and mind.

RE-Sensitized ==>> Response-Able Self-Correction

Why bother to do all that? ... Because the experiences and skills you learn transfer over into your daily life. Your bodymind becomes far more conscious of what's going on within you, and, gradually at first, you literally STOP tolerating many of the things you do that are not good for you. In many cases and circumstances, the bodymind Auto-Magically begins moving away from the negative movements and postures, the actions and activities, you find yourself doing on a daily basis. Your RE-sensitized and increasingly Response-Able bodymind becomes increasingly Self-Correcting, often before you even realize you're doing so.

You also learn to find those many brief moments throughout the day where you can instantly relax one or more muscle groups for brief moments, so as to prevent long-term accumulation of too much C.E.M.&.N.T. (When does the heart muscle relax? In between beats.) You therefore learn to relax your muscles in between the many movements you do throughout your day-to-day activities. Done correctly, THIS might even be more valuable, in the long run, than doing a half hour stretching practice every day, as important as I think THAT is. The two approaches actually work together, achieving somewhat different yet complimentary results.

Slow & Steady + NO Irritation = More Relaxation

Another Secret to DSL Therapy is the therapist's manual pressure upon your skin and muscle is slow & steady, with very little overt movement. NO cross-fiber techniques, NO gliding or rubbing, NO "twanging" of muscles or fascia. These far more common bodywork techniques CAN, without doubt, be VERY EFFECTIVE for MANY of the problems of many people. They DO work much of the time. But for some people who are extremely stressed or traumatized, or too de-sensitized to tell, they can be far too irritating and counter-productive.

On the other hand, Swedish and other styles of massage are more superficial in nature, and they are VERY beneficial in many ways, and should be used when possible. But those styles in many cases will NOT get down to the layers of muscle necessary to get TRUE structural de-compression and postural balance.

Therefore, with DSL Therapy, there is much reduced or eliminated irritation of the nervous system, as well as direct pressure on the layers of muscle that are most in need. The Bottom Line here is that you cannot peel an onion from the inside out, and it's easier to walk through a door AFTER you've opened it. That's also how the DSL Therapist thinks about, feels, and works with your muscles, skin & fascia. The result is DSL Therapy usually gets far deeper than even the usual "deep tissue" methods, and they can stay in the necessary layers of soft tissue far longer because you are not resisting them at all. ... You are not experiencing irritation or trauma in order to get rid of your irritation or trauma!

(There is one minor exception to this, called Neuro-Fascial Release, which is similar to skin rolling in Neuromuscular Therapy. This involves a gentle lifting of the skin with a slight pinching action of the therapist's fingers. It is sometimes not possible to do this without a LITTLE irritation in the first few moments or minutes. However, it is done VERY slowly, and VERY gently, so as, in most cases, to not be painful or irritating to You, the Client.)

As Mr. Gary Scott, author and publisher at www.garyascott.com said when receiving his first DSL session ...

"When You Started working on me, my Brain told me I NEEDED this!"

DSL Edgework is NOT Focused Primarily on Relief of Symptoms or Conditions. It's about Learning to Let-Go & Relax in Deeper & Wider Dimensions. Any Change in Your Symptoms or Conditions is a Natural By-Product.

BUT IF, somehow, your aches & pains and your various dysfunctions or bad posture are reduced or eliminated in the process of receiving DSL Therapy ... WELL, Very Sorry about that, but that's just an added bonus that we have no control over.
